Long before I was ever a judge, I was a big fan of the Park Hotel Waterford Sports Star Awards. They are a great awards scheme. They are done right, for the right reasons and they mean a lot to the people that win the monthly and overall awards.
Last week, and more so this week, everywhere I go people will be telling me who they think will be crowned the overall winner for 2018 and attempting to get me to spill the beans. Let me tell you now. You’re wasting your time and anyway that decision isn’t made till later this week but I can guarantee you that the decision making process is taken very seriously and as usual the adjudicating panel of Kieran and John O’Connor, Neil Gough and myself will have a very difficult task in picking who will become the 2018 overall Park Hotel winner in the 28th year of these awards. Will it be a new name on the trophy, a 21st different winner since the awards began back in 1991? Or will Craig Breen, Thomas Barr or Henry de Bromhead add to their collection of overall awards?

This year’s special guest is Waterford and Irish sporting legend, John Treacy. The Villierstown man had a glittering athletics career that saw him win two World Cross Country Gold medals and a famous silver in the marathon at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. He is now CEO of Sport Ireland.

Once again the list of winners this year shows the incredible strength in depth that there is right now in Waterford Sport on the national and international stages.
So who will win the overall prize? Will it be a man who has risen to the top of the game of rugby with Munster and Ireland in recent years in Jack O’Donoghue? Will it be former overall winner and World Rally Championship podium placer Craig Breen? Will it be the man who is helping the Blues back to the top, Alan Reynolds? Or from the same sport of soccer maybe it will be young guns Tom Carney or Lee O’Connor? Robin Dawson picked up his fourth monthly award this year, will he become the fourth overall winner from the sport of golf? What about Kieran Jackson who won a first monthly award for the sport of Triathlon? Or maybe Andrew Goff who has won back to back World U-23 rowing championship medals? Or international showjumping star Anthony Condon? Or will it be athletics in the shape of two time winner Thomas Barr or masters great Joe Gough? Or maybe Ballygunner’s Philip or Pauric Mahony or will red-hot Horse Racing trainer, Henry de Bromhead make it two in a row? All will be revealed on Saturday night by special guest John Treacy.
