On Sunday last, January 20, Carrick United officially opened their new spectator stand at the club ground Tom Drohan Park.
This was a very proud day for the club and particularly for the committee members and the numerous club volunteers
FAI CEO John Delaney did the honour of attending and unveiling our latest facility to benefit all patrons and supporters of the club.
The stand will be named the “PJ O’Neill Memorial Stand” after one of the club’s greatest servants.
During PJ’s lifetime, he dedicated himself to soccer and was involved during the 1950 “Rock Rovers” era through the beginning of Carrick United right through to his passing in 2015, his last year as the club’s President.
PJ worked hard in difficult times to help the game get a foothold in the sporting community serving as a club officer, manager, pitch maintenance and a ticket seller but his greatest love was schoolboy soccer.
In the early 70’s PJ along with Donal O’Callaghan formed a schoolboy street league in the town with the intention of putting forward a team for the Waterford Schoolboy League.
From that day with the outstanding assistance of his family schoolboy and now schoolgirl soccer also now thrives in the club and town.
PJ put his life and soul into Schoolboy soccer and indeed left behind a legacy of providing the facility to boys and girls. His inspiration guided others to follow on his great leadership.
Every player who played since the 1970s street league owe thanks to those involved over the years but especially to PJ, a true legend of the sport in Carrick-on-Suir.
It is Carrick United’s great privilege to honour the “Grandad of Carrick Soccer” – The Great PJ O’Neill!!
