Dear Editor,

I was more than surprised at the direction of your newspaper article last week (“Shanahan a no-show at first Council meeting”, June 11, 2019) which described me as a ‘no-show’ for the 1st meeting of new council and suggesting my absence was ‘conspicuous’!

In fact, I had given prior notice and offered sincere apologies to the council executive and to my council colleagues informing them I would not be in attendance at the meeting. My absence was due to a previous commitment I made to participate in an Irish overseas charitable event – I gave this commitment in July 2018, long before my council co-option nomination in November 2018 or the local elections of May 2019.

I take very seriously my responsibility and commitments as a councillor within Waterford City & County Council – my attendance record and active participation since January at council, committee steering group meetings and council workshops are testament to that. I believe this is something the article failed to give voice to and indeed a ‘counter narrative’ may have been assumed by many of your readers.

I look forward to a progressive collaborative working council in the interests of Waterford city and county citizens this coming term – I also hope for fair and responsible reporting by all media on the activities thereof.

Sincerely,

Cllr Matt Shanahan,

Waterford.
