On a perfect day for running, over 2,000 runners descended on Waterford City on Saturday for the WLR Viking Marathon, half and quarter marathons and relay and it was a most enjoyable event which aroused lots of interest in the City and out around the route which took in two bridges and many places of beauty and interest in our county to all visiting athletes and each of the sections were won in very respectable times.
The marathon winners were Alexander Wallace a Scotsman running with St Cocas AC in Kilcock in Kildare in 2 hrs 28 minutes 51 seconds, in second place just over a minute behind was Ciaran McKenna Star of Sea AC Co. Meath in 2.29.54 and Paul Stephenson a native of Kilmeaden running with Rathfarnham was third in 2.36.30.
The first lady home was Sarah Baryga Sli Chualainn Wickow in 2.59.44, Jill Hamill USA was a close second in 3.00.34 and Jean Lucey Grange Fermoy was third in 3.21.46. The Half Marathon winners were Yerod Derese an Ethiopian running with Carrick Aces, Carrickmacross Co. Monaghan in 64.56 and he was a runaway winner leading from the start and the holder of the women’s title Ruth Fitzgerald Waterford retained it in style in 81.29 , two minutes faster than last year
The Quarter Marathon winners were David Mansfield Clonmel in 38.10 and young Mollie Hutchinson Ferrybank in 48.28,the wheelchair winner was Gerry Forde Blarney and the Relay team that won was called BVSC. Lots of walkers took part over the different distances also.
It was also great to see local athletes in addition to those already mentioned doing well with Liz Nyhan West Waterford third in the Half, Liam Stack Ferrybank third in the Quarter as was Janet Quinlan Saturday Road Runners, Alan Slattery Waterford 4th, Aoife Casey Ferrybank 4th, while Emer Larkin Passage East did very well being the 6th woman overall home in the Marathon.


Category winners from this area were, Half Marathon; F45 Liz Nyhan West Waterford, F55 Siobhan Kennedy Focus on Fitness, Junior men,Jack Maley Waterford, Qtr Marathon; Junior Craig O’Brien Ferrybank, M40 Brian Murphy Carrick on Suir, M50 Liam Power Ferrybank, F35 Joan Mahony Waterford, F 45 Jane English Deise Dragons,Marathon; F55 Mary B Ryan Jennings Waterford, M60 Gerard Kervick, M70 Tom Roche.
It was a special day for Ted O’Leary West Waterford as it was his 100th Marathon completed. The event which is driven each year by WLRFM with Roisin Ferris at the steering wheel is a major logistical undertaking for months and receives great support from al the print media in the area. On the day Race Director Joe Cawley had terrific support as usual by The Gardai, many Voluntary bodies, Ambulance units, Physios personnel and individual stewards, volunteers, musicians and lots of support from Waterford Council and WIT in Carriganore and Waterford University Hospital.
