The Irish Life Health National Cross Country Championships day one went ahead on Sunday last in The National Sports Campus in Abbotstown with hundreds of athletes from all over the 32 counties competing including many from Waterford.
Huge fields were the order of the day in each event and Waterford athletes did well in the individual and team sections. Two Waterford AC runners came up with big performances Una O’Brien was 3rd under 18 and David Mc Glynn 4th U-23 – he was 15th senior home. For West Waterford AC Sarah Gaffney was 5th U-12 and Lucy Holmes 6th U18, another high scorer was Ruth Heery Waterford AC 8th in the junior race.
The ladies junior race turned out to be a very successful one for Waterford with the County team winning the Inter County team award and Waterford AC winning the Inter Club award. The scorers on the County team were Ruth Heery, Una O’Brien, Lucy Holmes and Anna O’Connor and on the Waterford AC team Heery, O’Brien, O’Connor and Emma Caulfield. The West Waterford boys u 14 team were third In the Inter club section also. Provincial team awards were also awarded and a few Waterford athletes were members of Munster teams that won and were placed in the first three.

Munster Juvenile “B” and Intermediate Cross-Country Championships
On Sunday next there’s a Munster Cross Country Championship fixture in The Turnpike, Two Mile Borris in Tipperary starting at 11.30am. The events on the programme are Intermediate Championships for men and women as well as the B Championships for boys and girls U-9, 11, 13, 15, 17. Athletes can move up one age group in the juvenile section except the U-9.
Other Cross Country fixtures in December are Sunday 8th European Cross Country Lisbon Portugal, Sunday 15th National Novice and Juvenile uneven ages Dunboyne Co. Meath.

Waterford AC Half Marathon
The Waterford AC Annual Half Marathon is on Saturday week December 7 th 9.30 am (please note change of time) at WIT Sports Campus Carriganore see event website. This race is already sold out and entries closed. Please note the organisers are not operating a waiting list but do offer a transfer facility but this is between the two participants they are not capturing names.
A reminder of the Annual General meeting of Waterford AC on this Wednesday November 27th at 7.30 pm in WIT Carriganore.

Winter League
The Annual Winter League is up and running in the City every Thursday evening starting at 7pm at the RSC, registration from 6pm. Whether you are running in the winter league or just training around our roads its essential that in the dark months especially you all wear reflective clothing its just common sense. Drivers, cyclists (who also should be well lit up) need to know where runners are and runners need to be aware of where drivers and cyclists are.
