A YOUNG city woman has been charged with manslaughter and neglect, following the discovery of a newborn baby’s body at the Caredoc offices in Waterford in 2018.

The remains of the baby girl Sophie Elizabeth Corcoran were discovered at the Cork Road Caredoc Offices on April 22, 2018. The circumstances of the discovery were fully investigated, and it led to a file being submitted to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

The DPP directed that 20-year-old Caitlin Corcoran of Apartment 17, Block A, Mount Suir, in Waterford City was to be charged with the following two counts – the manslaughter and neglect of the baby.

Shortly before 6.30pm yesterday (Monday), Sergeant Michelle Burns arrested the 20-year-old at Waterford Garda Station for the purpose of charge. She was brought before Judge Gerard Furlong at a special sitting of Waterford District Court at 7pm. Following evidence of arrest, charge and caution, Judge Furlong remanded Corcoran on bail with conditions to March 3.
