The Teaching Council released a statement today, clarifying that they have no role and no position in regard to the State examinations. This followed a suggestion made by Independent Seanad candidate Peter Finnegan that the Leaving Certificate and other state examinations be postponed until September.
“It takes pressure off teachers, it takes pressure off parents and it focuses the young people that are sitting them on September as a date.”
The Teaching Council hit back against this suggestion to state that “The Council wishes to clarify that it has no role and no position in relation to the State examinations and has not made any statement with regard to State examinations. Any suggestion to the contrary is inaccurate. “
Finnegan’s suggestion follows the indefinite delay of the orals and practical examinations, which were due to start next Monday, March 23. As it stands, the Leaving Certificate is scheduled to begin June 3.
