Paddy Kirk is pictured receiving a presentation this week as he left the Ballyduff AFC committee after 50 years of loyal service from club secretary Joanne King and club treasurer Aedin Foran.

One of Waterford soccer’s longest serving club men stepped aside this week after a lifetime of service to his beloved Ballyduff AFC.

Paddy Kirk is one of the most well known and popular figures in Waterford soccer and at the club’s AGM this week, he stepped down as chairman and so left the club’s committee for the first time since he helped found the club fifty years ago this year, in 1970.

Ballyduff AFC posted the following tribute on their Facebook page. “The Club would like to extend heartfelt thanks to Paddy Kirk who retired from his role as Chairman of our Club. Paddy has been actively involved in the Club since day one, 50 years ago. Paddy has been a Committee member for all those years in many roles, being Chairman for the past 10 years. Paddy was presented with a token by Club sec Joanne and Club Tresurer Aedin. Paddy will continue to support the Club.”

We wish Paddy well on his retirement and thank him for his association with this paper over the years and long may that continue.

Not surprisingly there has been an outpouring of messages on Facebook from local soccer people at the news….here are just some.

Well done Paddy. Great service to the club and community over the last 50 years. You should be very proud of the legacy you are leaving. End of an era in ways. Service like this will not happen again in modern times. I don’t think you are going too far but a rest is allowed at this stage!

His great love and devotion to Ballyduff AFC was evident for all to see. Great men like Paddy paved the way for all the young players who have been part of this club showing them what hard work and dedication can achieve. Wonderful facilities, great coaches and volunteers and then there’s Paddy the very heartbeat of the club. I’m sure his wisdom and vast knowledge will still be called upon many years from now.
