Waterford Crystal Football Club have become the first club in the Waterford Schoolboy League to suspend activities for two of their teams ahead of the start of the 2020/21 season due to a suspected case of Covid-19.

The Schoolboy player involved will be tested for the virus in the coming days to summon the decision of the club committee to suspend training for the two teams, Under 13 and 14, until the results of the test are known.

In a statement on the Waterford Cyrstal Soccer Academy Facebook page Covid-19 officer Michael Whyte said, “We have been informed by the parents of one of our schoolboy players that their child is to be tested for Covid-19 in the coming days.

“In the interest of Health and Safety we have taken the decision to cease all activities for Under 13 and Under 14 teams only, who according to our Covid tracker records may have come into contact with the suspected case over the past 14 days.

“The relevant coaches will cancel planned training sessions or matches. Parents are asked to respect the privacy of the club member involved. An update will be provided as soon as it is available.”

The Waterford Schoolboy League is set to begin on Saturday, September 19, with fixtures for the season ahead set to be revealed in the coming days.
