GARTER Lane Arts Centre “is not going anywhere and we will let you know in a loud and clear manner when our doors open again!”

In a message posted on its website, Arts Centre Executive Director Síle Penkert (pictured) said that she and her team continues to work behind the scenes in anticipation of when the venue can re-open.

“Not unlike literally everyone else on the planet currently, we here in the arts sector are experiencing strange, challenging (and to be perfectly honest) sometimes downright difficult times,” she writes.

“Our doors are closed and our colleagues and artistic, creative, and business friends have all gone home for this period of lockdown…The Garter Lane Team is busy and proactive, and we are working on ways and means to bring you on-line engagement opportunities that are representative of the wealth and depth of artistic endeavour in our community.”

Síle Penkert said the GarterLane.ie website is one of its key communication channels and “shows the public both what we do and what the artists who work with us do, and we look forward to sharing that work with you in the coming weeks and months…

“I genuinely want this period to be over, I think we all do. And until we can all meet in person again to experience and celebrate great art in our city, we must work collectively to keep ourselves and each other safe.”

Garter Lane is embracing the online world in these pandemic times with a free online programme for “emerging young creatives” in Waterford aged between 18 and 25. Titled ‘Talking To Yourself Won’t Get You There’ and convened by former broadcast journalist Clodagh Walsh, the programme aims to “help (people) build their skills so they can gain confidence and speak with ease”. Clodagh adds: “With the right tools you will be able to communicate your message with confidence and authenticity. If you’re just starting out and want to develop your skills further, I can help.”

The three one hour Zoom sessions will be held on three Mondays – November 23 and 30 and December 7 from 7pm. To register, email [email protected]
