NEARFORM, the Tramore-based company behind the Covid-19 tracking app, has won an Irish Red Cross Humanitarian Award.

The software solutions company, based in Tramore, created the Covid-19 contact tracing app for the HSE after the outbreak of Covid-19 in Ireland.

The remote team worked to create a prototype of the Covid Tracker app within 10 days and it was launched in July. Over a quarter of Ireland’s population downloaded the app within the first 36 hours.

Nearform later donated the underlying code to the Linux Foundation Public Health, under the name COVID Green.

This enabled other public health authorities across the world to use it for free to build their own apps, leading the app to be subsequently picked up in New York and New Jersey.

The app won the Innovation for Change Award, which recognises the achievements of an individual or team who have had a humanitarian impact on society through innovation.

Nearform CEO Cian Ó Maidín said the award “means so much” to the company, adding that he was really proud of the work Nearform did in 2020,” in addition to his pride in the HSE.

“Without their vision, tenacity, courage and the countless hours of work this year, the Covid Tracker and Covid Green would not have happened. They are heroes who save lives every day.”
