Following the election of the new Waterford District Junior League committee by a virtual EGM on Thursday night, last night the new committee met virtually to allocate positions.
On Thursday night eight new faces joined the committee before that was reduced to seven after Ferrybank’s Mick Lynch opted out within hours of his election. But number became eight once more last night (Monday) when Barbara Scannell was also co-opted onto the new league committee. Barbara has become just the second woman to be elected to the junior league committee after Lynda O’Shea.
Just three members of the outgoing committee remain. John Foskin, Damien Tiernan and Brendan White after the virtual EGM hosted by the Munster FA was held on Thursday evening in what has been described as a “beginning of a new era” for football in Waterford.
After Doheny, Willie Moore and Ger Murphy stepped down from their officer roles in Villa, St. Saviour’s and Dungarvan Celtic respectively, they were joined by Ferrybank’s Mick Lynch, but he quickly resigned his position on the league within hours of the meeting ending.
Ballinroad’s Bill Gourley and Tramore’s Kevin O’Hanlon will also be part of the new regime, while former Waterford United manager and Waterford Crystal clubman Brendan Rea may be seen as a surprise inclusion, but there’s no doubting that he’ll bring a wealth of football experience to the table.
The big question now is when football is likely to resume in Waterford amid the Covid 19 pandemic, but for now let’s wish this new group of elected administrators the very best in bringing football in Waterford forward in such tying and uncertain times. We wish them all the very best.
