THREE Ballydurn teenagers have taken it upon themselves to clean up Waterford’s countryside during lockdown.

Orla Swift (13), Rebecca Walsh (13) and Roisin Power (14) who attend St Declan’s community college in Kilmacthomas were regularly going for socially distanced walks on their local road in Ballydurn Kilmacthomas and saw rubbish on the road sides. They decided to do something about it and got in touch with the local council for bags and pickers.

They have been out cleaning more than three times over the last two weeks and to date they have collected 22 bags of rubbish. The three girls said they will continue to collect until the two mile stretch of road is done.

Michelle Swift, Orla’s mother, told the Waterford News and Star she was “proud” of the girls.

“Teenagers can get overlooked for their contribution to community life and I think they can be an inspiration to others to get out there and clean up your local area so we can finally go out and enjoy this wonderful countryside that we have,” Ms Swift said.
