Cork’s Ephie Fitzgerald will patrol the sidelines for the Waterford senior footballers in 2022 and 2023 after he was last night appointed by the Waterford County Board.

The former Cork ladies football manager, who led them to the 2016 All-Ireland before stepping down this year, is swapping directly with Shane Ronayne, his predecessor in Waterford and who recently was appointed to take over the Cork women’s team.

An experienced coach and four-time All-Ireland winner with his club Nemo Rangers, Fitzgerald has been appointed for a two-year term. As a coach he worked with the Limerick team that reached the last eight of the Sam Maguire in 2011, for the first and so far only time. He also coached the Clare senior team in the past.

A statement from Waterford on Thursday evening confirmed the appointment.

“Waterford GAA are delighted to announce that at a meeting of the Management Committee tonight Ephie Fitzgerald was unanimously recommended for ratification as the new county senior football manager on a two-year term”.
