A total of 3,893 confirmed cases of Covid-19 have been made known to the Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC) today. As of 8am this morning, there were 611 patients with Covid-19 in hospitals, 132 of which are in Intensive Care (ICU).

Over the past 24 hours, 48 people with the coronavirus have been admitted to hospital while 59 people were discharged. In the same timeframe, a total of 12 Covid patients were admitted to ICUs while six people were discharged.

In the past seven days, there have been 209,600 Covid-19 tests completed with the positive rate coming to 15.3 per cent.

Today’s statement from NPHET referenced 43 deaths related to Covid-19 that have been newly notified over the past week (since last Wednesday), bringing to 5,652 the number of Covid-19-related deaths in Ireland. This does not mean that all newly notified deaths have occurred within the past seven days.

In addition, the in-depth weekly report supplied by the HPSC regarding Covid-19 deaths reported in the State has yet to be uploaded onto its website – at the time of writing (just prior to 5:30pm this Wednesday evening).

Said Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dr Tony Holohan: “Approximately one in seven adults in the last week have had flu-like, cold-like, or Covid-like symptoms.

“The most important action you can take if you experience any symptoms of Covid-19 is to self-isolate immediately. This means staying indoors and avoiding contact with other people, including, in so far as possible, those you live with. Arrange to take a PCR test, not an antigen test, and continue to self-isolate while you wait for your test and the results.”

Dr Holohan added: “I understand this is difficult, but in order to avoid passing Covid-19 or other respiratory illnesses on to your friends, family or work colleagues, rapidly self-isolating as soon as symptoms begin is the most important thing you can do.

“It’s also important to remember you still need to isolate for as long as you’re symptomatic, and until 48 hours after your symptoms have settled, even if your PCR did not detect Covid-19.”
