Judge Eugene O’Kelly

AT Waterford Circuit Court on Wednesday (November 24) Judge Eugene O’Kelly warned against defendants awaiting sentencing before Christmas “using covid” to delay their cases.

Judge O’Kelly said that the majority of cases where Covid has been used as an excuse have been either “false or concerning”. He said that it was “disappointing” that people would attempt to use the pandemic to gain a “relatively short term advantage”. He said that he wouldn’t forget the names of the people who were claiming to have Covid or Covid symptoms and would regard it as an aggravating factor when they are eventually sentenced. Judge O’Kelly added that he would be expecting “medical evidence” for all future excuses citing Covid-19.
