OVER the past two weeks Gardaí in the Waterford Division have arrested 11 drivers on suspicion of driving under the influence of an intoxicant.

Gardaí carry out regular mandatory intoxicant tests at checkpoints throughout the county and have the power to stop vehicles under Section 109 of the Road Traffic Act.

“We would caution people that if they plan to drive on a night the best advice is not to drink alcoholic drinks,” said Gardaí, who urged motorists to check out the Citizen’s Information website for useful information regarding penalties.

Separately, two motorists were caught driving in excess of the 100 kph speed limit.

Waterford Gardaí were operating a speed checkpoint on July 31 when the two vehicles were detected. One was driving at 131 and the other was clocked at 140kmh. Fixed charge notices have been issued to both drivers.

At around midnight, on Tuesday, August 2, on Thomas Street in Dungarvan Gardai on patrol observed that a number of vehicles had been damaged. Some had the wing mirrors smashed and others had smashed windscreens.

In total five cars were damaged on Thomas Street and another on Fitzgerald’s Terrace.

A male was arrested in the vicinity by Dungarvan Gardaí and conveyed to Dungarvan Garda Station.
