Local Notes: TV series shoot, soccer success, gold medals and scout troop news

The TV shoot will take place in the Portlaw area
Waterford Film Centre is very excited to be working closely with an international TV series set in the 30s, shooting in Portlaw.
Casting is currently taking place for background artists age 18+ for different roles and they would love everyone to be local to the South East.
It is not required to have acting experience, but a plus if you do. The chosen applicants will be required for costume fitting prior to the start of shoot. Extras should be available for some dates between mid-August to mid-October and the availability for dates will depend on the role.
The production company is looking for people over 18, of any nationality, but you must have a permit to work in Ireland.

A second European Gold Medal for Waterford's Diane Behan meant she added to the cabinet along with her previous Euro gold and World gold medals. The Waterford Triathlon club member started athletics following the death of her husband, finding sport as a lifeline. Congratulations Diane.
The latest results from Ballyduff-Portlaw Bridge Club were composed of: 1 - Jeremy Fields and Anne Marie Browne; 2 - Wm. Tobin and Peggy - Murphy; 3 - Ann Tobin and Mgt Pragnell.
The 10th Portlaw Scout Troop cubs had a brilliant weekend at the National Scout Competition at Larch Hill Scout Centre, in Dublin. They had great fun and new friendships were made (which is always the best part). They also won silver standard for their hard efforts.
The Beaver group also finished their year in great style with an end of year party at World of Bounce. If you are interested in your child joining our Beavers/Cubs/Scouts group in September, please complete the waiting list form on our homepage.
Our highly skillful U13s had a convincing win over Tramore recently making it three wins from three for them. Keep up the good work boys.
WellKids training continued their training recently in our alley. It was such a sunny morning and the kids did so well at training, we treated them to an ice cream at the end to cool down. The kids also got delivery of their special Portlaw GAA Wellkids Jerseys, from Azzurri Sport and I think you will all agree they look great.
Due to numerous requests from members after seeing our new Portlaw Camogie club gear, we have had an online shop for the club with Balon, for three weeks. The shop will be available until Wednesday, July 3. You can visit the shop directly to order gear, which will be delivered to you.
The recent U14 cup final visit to Ballyduff was the just reward for all the hard work and commitment that this team has shown all season.
Going down 1-0 to the League Champions, Waterford Crystal, they kept fighting away and managed to claim a historic first ladies victory winning the U14 Cup Final on score line of 4-2.
A full report on the game appeared in a recent edition of Waterford News & Star. Our panel of girls were led out by the match officials, evoking the start of the Champions league finals, and the tension was palpable.
Crystal that got off to a flying start, attacking down the right wing on multiple occasions. The lead came after seven minutes by a speculative cross which ended up in the back of the net.
The next 10 minutes was critical to the determination of the result with our brave goalie Aoife Foley, who was coolness personified, saving a penalty to a huge roar from the Portlaw supporters.
From a preordained move Freya Mitchell from 35 yards out on the touchline launched a missile that went all the way to the back of the net and gave us the equalizer but more importantly, Freya getting her first goal of the season, in a Cup final.
On 29 minutes, with Portlaw’ s next attack, from a long throw goalwards, the Crystal defence cleared it to the edge of the 18 yard box where Sarah Kelly connected with it on the half volley and directed it into the top corner to the deafen roar of the huge Portlaw supporters, for a 2-1 lead.
The second half started with Portlaw's wingers on the attack and our defence rock solid and with the confidence Aoife Foley giving us all in between the sticks.
Chloe Rochford won a ball she had no right to win off the left back and crossed to Anna O’Connell who directed the ball towards the in-rushing Hollie Ross, who elegantly side footed to the corner of the net to give us a 3-1 lead and break the hearts of the Crystal defence. Then Anna O’Connell carried the ball up for Chloe Rochford to lift the ball over the keeper and give us a 4-1 lead and the crowd went wild.
Crystal did score a fantastic goal from a free kick from Vittoria to give them a lifeline at 4-2 but we were not to be beaten and on when the final whistle sounded the pitch invasion started from all our younger supporters and teammates. The joy to see them all hugging, falling and laughing - and some crying tears of happiness - will live long in the memory. It was fantastic to have our club secretary Ger Walsh on the sideline watching over this priceless victory and its testament to his outstanding commitment and efforts to Portlaw and Waterford ladies football. Ger is an absolute gentleman and doesn’t get the credit he deserves for all the organising and time spent behind the scenes.
This victory was for all the girls who have committed to this team, and we hope they all enjoyed this journey that has given us all the smiles and buzz that we feel still today. The beeping of the cars and the procession lead out by the local Garda car will stick in the memory and onto the Forge Bar for refreshments and those cherished memories which will last forever.
Thanks to the club for all their support during the season from their coaches, David Walsh, Leo Flynn and Freddy Kelly.
